Fire destroys Mountview home early Sunday morning

A home in Red Deer’s Mountview neighbourhood is completely destroyed after an early morning fire on Sunday.

Red Deer Emergency Services responded around 6:45 to the house at 4208 34 Street Close. Fire Prevention Officer Wes Van Bavel says they’ve narrowed down the cause to the improper disposal of cigarettes.

“In this case, we had a peat moss planter sitting up on a wooden deck against the house which had vinyl siding on it. When it started on fire, it caught the siding, got up into the soffits and then into the attic,” says Van Bavel.

He adds that peat moss is very combustible and should not be relied upon for putting out cigarettes.

The occupants of the home, one man and one woman, as well as their two pets, all got out safely and unharmed.

Damages are estimated at about $400,000. There was also extensive damage to the siding of one of the neighbouring homes.

RDES staff will go door-to-door to approximately 100 homes in the neighbourhood on October 30th to speak with residents about fire safety as part of the After the Fire safety program.
