Senior Rustlers partner with Aspen Heights on Breakfast Program

Oct 25, 2019 | 8:00 AM

The Red Deer Senior AA Rustlers are excited to announce a partnership with Aspen Heights Elementary School to ensure no students ever go to school hungry.

To kick-start their involvement with the existing Aspen Heights program, the Rustlers presented the school with a $2,000 donation towards their breakfast program, and surprised a group of students with a floor hockey game and pizza party.

“The students were star struck by the players that came to play floor hockey with them today. The players came to share their love of the game with the students and that showed in every moment they spent with the kids,” said Sian Milner, a Grade 4/5 and music teacher at Aspen Heights. “They played with them, had fun with them and visited with them over lunch. They gave them tips on the game, answered their questions, signed autographs, shared their hockey stories and listened while the students shared their own stories. The excitement and joy could be felt throughout the gym and lunchroom. It is hard to express how much experiences like this mean to our kids, but I hope that the players realize what a great gift they gave to the students today.”

With community involvement a major focus of the Rustlers organization, team president and captain Mike Dempster says this particular cause hit close to home.

“No kid should ever have to go to school hungry, and after learning how many children at Aspen Heights do just that, let alone all of Red Deer, it was an easy decision for us to get behind this program,” said Dempster. “Being able to come to the school and share our love of the game with the students is a bonus for us, and we can’t wait to continue this partnership with Aspen Heights.”

The Rustlers are back in action Saturday night as they host the Fort Saskatchewan Chiefs. Puck drop is at 7:30 p.m. at the Penhold Regional Multiplex. Tickets are $10 at the door, kids 12 and under are free.
