Collicutt Centre locked down for police search

Oct 21, 2019 | 12:43 PM

The Collicutt Centre in east Red Deer was put on lockdown Monday morning, marking the third time in less than a week that RCMP were called to the recreation facility.

The lockdown was put in place just before 11:30 a.m. An officer at the scene told rdnewsNOW that RCMP were “looking for someone last reported to be inside the Collicutt.” The officer said that person was eventually located off-site.

A subsequent media release from Red Deer RCMP explained that they responded to reports of a person with a weapon outside of the Collicutt Centre. RCMP took one male in custody and say they are not searching for any other suspects.

The lockdown was lifted at noon and operations at the Collicutt Centre have returned to normal.

Nearby Hunting Hills and Notre Dame high schools were placed under hold and secure during the incident. Voters who were casting their ballot at the Hunting Hills voting station for the federal election were not allowed in or out of the school while the hold and secure was in place.

RCMP say no further details will be released at this time as the incident remains under investigation.

Twice last week, police responded to altercations near the Collicutt Centre on Tuesday and Wednesday, resulting in both neighbouring high schools to be placed under hold and secure.

Hold and secure procedure is used when when police are responding to a threat or incident in the general vicinity of – not at or directly affecting – a school.
