Alberta expanding duties licenced practical nurses can perform

The Alberta government is expanding the duties that licenced practical nurses are allowed to perform.

It’s amending professional regulations to allow the province’s 16,000 LPN’s to administer blood, provide intravenous nutrition and medication by invasive procedures, and to dispense certain drugs starting February 1, 2020.

Health Minister Tyler Shandro says the move is part of the government’s efforts to strengthen the health system.

“Our government is committed to strengthening our health system, and one key way to do that is to allow licensed practical nurses and other health professionals to practise to the full extent of their competence and training,” said Shandro.
