Weekly recap: October 9-13

RED DEER- The Hockey Queens began the season with two wins over the Olds College Broncos.

The RDC Kings Hockey team earned three of a possible four points against the MacEwan University Griffins.

At Grand Prix #5, the RDC Cross Country Running Kings & Queens had several strong races and they captured the team trophy for the best combined men’s and women’s results.

Both soccer squads dropped their games in Olds.

In preseason competition, the Kings & Queens Basketball teams picked up wins at the RDC Thanksgiving Classic Tournament.

The Red Deer College Volleyball teams downed the Broncos in non-conference action on the road.

Here is a summary of what happened this past week in RDC Athletics:

Queens Hockey | Thursday, October 10 | Olds College

The RDC Queens defeated the Olds College Broncos 3-2. Mary Hirsch, Brooklyn Rowley and Ashley Sutherland scored for the Queens. RDC goaltender Karlee Fetch made 18 saves.

Queens Hockey | Friday, October 11 | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre

On home ice, the Queens (2-0-0-0) earned a 3-2 victory over the Broncos (0-2-0-0). Jessi-Lynn Sumaling, Ashley Sutherland and Braxtyn Shawara were the RDC goal scorers. Queens goalie Madison Fox turned aside 11 shots for her first win in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC).

Kings Hockey | Friday, October 11 | MacEwan University

Despite outshooting the Griffins, the Red Deer College Kings dropped a hard-fought 3-2 double overtime decision to MacEwan University. Lynnden Pastachak and Jacob Wozney found the back of the net. Kings goaltender Arik Weersink played well and made 28 saves.

Kings Hockey | Saturday, October 12 | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre

The Kings (1-0-1-0) skated to a 6-4 home win over the Griffins (1-1-0-0), earning three of a possible four points in the weekend series. Scoring for RDC were Jacob Wozney, Ryley Smith, Tyler Podgorenko, Regan Doig, and Chase Thudium had a pair. Arik Weersink made 18 saves, picking up the win.

RDC Cross Country | Grand Prix #5 | Saturday, October 12 | U of A Augustana

The Kings & Queens won the team trophy, with the best combined men’s and women’s results among the participating ACAC teams. The RDC Queens took second spot as a group, only seven team points behind the Lethbridge College Kodiaks. Over 6 km, Shayla Sklaruk (24:52) paced the Queens, finishing second among ACAC women. The U of A Augustana Vikings placed third on their home course. While the RDC Kings and U of A Augustana Vikings were tied for second with 46 team points, the Kings lost the tie breaker and were shuffled down to third. The SAIT Trojans picked up first with 30 points. Lacombe’s Daniel Szucs (28:30) led the Kings over 8 km, placing fourth among men. SAIT will host the ACAC Cross Country Running Championships on Saturday, October 26.

Queens Soccer | Sunday, October 13 | Olds College

The Queens (4-5-0) dropped an 8-1 decision to the Broncos (6-3-1) on the road in a Women’s Cancer Awareness Game. Bailey Richarde scored for RDC.

Kings Soccer | Sunday, October 13 | Olds College

The Red Deer College Kings Soccer team (6-2-1) fell 5-2 to the Olds College Broncos (5-5-0) in a Women’s Cancer Awareness Game. Pedro Humberto Mourao Neto recorded both RDC markers.

Red Deer College Queens 4 – Olds College Broncos 1 (25-9, 25-18, 16-25, 25-15 and 15-12) The Queens won in four sets, but the teams decided to play a fifth.

Kings Volleyball | Wednesday, October 9 | Three Hills School

RDC Kings 3 – Olds College Broncos 2 (19-25, 28-26, 25-22, 26-24 and 12-15) The Kings also won in four sets, but the squads played five.
