Central Alberta can expect snow by Tuesday morning

Environment and Climate Change Canada has issued a special weather statement for the Red Deer region and other parts of Alberta.

Communities in central Alberta impacted include:

  • Camrose Co. near Bashaw and Meeting Creek
  • City of Red Deer
  • Co. of Paintearth near Halkirk and Big Knife Prov. Park
  • Co. of Stettler near Big Valley
  • Co. of Stettler near Botha and Gadsby
  • Co. of Stettler near Byemoor and Endiang
  • Co. of Stettler near Donalda
  • Co. of Stettler near Stettler Nevis and Rochon Sands
  • Flagstaff Co. near Forestburg and Galahad
  • Lacombe Co. near Clive Alix and Mirror
  • Lacombe Co. near Eckville
  • Lacombe Co. near Lacombe Blackfalds and Bentley
  • Ponoka Co. near Ponoka and Maskwacis
  • Red Deer Co. near Elnora Lousana and Delburne
  • Red Deer Co. near Penhold Innisfail and Bowden
  • Red Deer Co. near Pine Lake
  • Red Deer Co. near Spruce View and Red Lodge Prov. Park

The advisory is also in effect for Rocky Mountain House and Drayton Valley.

According to the statement, a low pressure system is developing in the Yukon and will move into the Northwest Territories Sunday night.

An intense cold front behind that system will drop into northern Alberta on Monday and then through southern Alberta by Tuesday morning. Gusty northerly winds will bring a twenty degree drop in the mercury with Tuesday highs expected to be below zero.

“Mixed precipitation will accompany the front starting with rain and changing quickly over to snow especially in southwestern Alberta. Amounts of 5 to 10 cm are forecast with possibly higher amounts of 20 cm along the foothills,” the statement reads.

“As well, the Highways 93 Icefields Parkway could see 15 to 25 cm and a snowfall warning is in effect for the higher elevations. Heavy snow should taper off by Tuesday evening.”
