Kings and Queens ready for dominant seasons on the ice

It’s time to drop the puck on another ACAC season for the Red Deer College Kings and Queens hockey teams.

The Queens get action started October 10 against the Broncos in Olds, and 24 hours later host their home opener in a rematch versus Olds at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre. Both games have 7 p.m. start times.

“That should be a good series right off the bat,” says Camryn Wallan, a third-year forward from Beaverlodge. “We’re going to have to make sure that we use our speed, get pucks to the net and make sure we capitalize on our opportunities.”

Perhaps most importantly, the Queens are a very tight-knit group this season.

“The vibe in the dressing room is fantastic. The girls seem to really get along and care about each other. They seem to be really connected so I think that bodes well on the ice for us as well,” says Head Coach Kelly Coulter, who has 12 returning student-athletes at his disposal.

“Some of the student-athletes have been more dominant goal scorers on their teams, so we’re hoping that will parlay into this season. Character and compete level are common traits that we see with all of our players, which makes us extremely happy.”

Meantime, the Kings roster is a veteran one with 19 returning student-athletes. Head Coach Trevor Keeper notes this is the most experienced group he’s put together since 2013-2014.

“We are going into our seventh year in the league and we have a good core of third and fourth-year guys,” he says. “We feel that we learned from last year. We’ve been to the semi-finals the last couple of years. It could be the factor that pushes this group through to the next level.”

Unfortunately, RDC did lose graduating All-Conference defenceman Tanner Butler, but the Kings are excited to welcome first-year blueliners Carter Wolski, Boedy Donald and Daniel Liberty. Another addition is forward Regan Doig, rounding out a group of new faces that Keeper is pleased with.

“The new guys understand where our standards are. It trickles down and is all part of our culture. We have good depth right through the lineup including with the rookies that we brought in,” he says.

“Carter Wolski is a smaller defenceman, but very dynamic and can skate like the wind.”

The Kings open their season on the road against MacEwan University on Oct. 11. The next night, they play the Griffins once again but at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre. Again, start times for both are 7 p.m.
