CIBC Run for the Cure set for Red Deer on Sunday

Sep 30, 2019 | 11:02 AM

Raising awareness and funds for breast cancer research in Canada is the goal behind this weekend’s CIBC Run for the Cure in Red Deer.

The 17th annual event in Red Deer will take place at Bower Ponds on Sunday, Oct. 6 starting with registration at 8:00 a.m., opening ceremonies at 9:30 a.m., and both the 5km and 1km walks beginning at 10:00 a.m. Awards and closing ceremonies are scheduled for 11:00 a.m.

The CIBC Run for the Cure will take place in 57 communities across Canada this year. It has raised $445 million for breast cancer research since 1992, with over $98,000 raised locally. Last year, 82,000 Canadians took part in the CIBC Run for the Cure.

With the help of donors, it’s hoped the CIBC Run for the Cure will reduce the number of people diagnosed with breast cancer, reduce mortality for those who develop the disease, and improve the quality of life for those affected.

Canadian Cancer Society communications lead Devon Haley says between ground-breaking research, compassionate support services, cancer information and advocacy on behalf of Canadians, the event has a significant impact each year.

“We’re hoping for that seven to eight hundred mark as far as walkers and runners go,” says Haley. “There’s a lot of awareness out there but there’s still the need for that awareness to be spread. It’s a way to share in some of those feelings that you may have, whether it’s friends and family that have been affected, yourself directly affected, it’s a good way to come together with the community and celebrate those successes and that hope that we have.”

Officials say one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer, but note a 44 per cent decrease in breast cancer mortality rates since the mid 1980’s.

Volunteers and participants planning to attend this Sunday are now able to park at Bower Ponds, as there will be no bus shuttle service this year. Overflow parking will be available at Carnival Cinemas.
