Village of Caroline seeks to avoid Fire Agreement termination

The Village of Caroline has sent in a letter to Clearwater County asking them to “retract its Notice of Termination of the Regional Fire Agreement and to enter into reasonable negotiations with the Partners to resolve the dispute in good faith.”

It was on June 18 that the Town of Rocky Mountain House and the Village of Caroline received a letter from Clearwater County stating that they would be terminating the current Fire Services Agreement effective December 31.

On July 4, the Town of Rocky requested a mediation for intermunicipal negotiations in accordance with the Stronger Together Agreement between the municipalities.

“I don’t like the wording ‘reasonable.’ I think we’ve been very reasonable,” Clearwater County Councillor Tim Hoven mentioned of his feelings on the implied wording.

Deputy Reeve John Vandermeer stated that communications needed to be opened up in order to effect change.

“I believe the reason the county went through with this is to open up negotiations,” he explained.

Reeve Jim Duncan told council that if Caroline gave this before the mediation, then maybe they could have agreed to it, but finished by saying, “The County would always be willing to discuss the agreement”.

The mediation does not have a date set as of yet, but representatives from each party will be meeting soon to discuss the coming negotiations.
