Court appearance for Eckville man facing more than 80 child sexual-exploitation charges

Sep 26, 2019 | 11:08 AM

Work continues by lawyers on both sides to resolve the case for an Eckville man facing over 80 charges for crimes against children.

The man has been in custody since he was arrested by Sylvan Lake RCMP on January 10.

His arrest came after police in Australia tipped off the Alberta Law Enforcement Response Team’s Internet Child Exploitation (ICE) unit about a suspect involved in the online sharing of child pornography.

More than a million photos and videos were recovered when police searched homes in Eckville and Fox Creek. He is also accused of having sexually assaulted at least eight child victims dating back to 2013.

The long list of charges against him includes sexual assault, sexual contact with a child, voyeurism, and accessing/making/distributing child pornography.

Defence lawyer Robin Snider has been working with a Calgary-based special prosecutor to resolve the charges.

In a bid to speed things along, a judge in Red Deer provincial court on Wednesday approved the relocation of the accused from the Edmonton Remand Centre to the Red Deer Remand Centre before his next scheduled court appearance on Oct. 30.

EDITOR’S NOTE: The name of the accused was made subject to publication ban on Oct. 30. Our story has been revised to comply with the court-ordered ban.
