Four injured in Highway 11 crashes west of Red Deer

RCMP are investigating a pair of crashes involving a eight vehicles and a moose west of Red Deer Wednesday morning that shut down both eastbound lanes of Highway 11 for several hours.

Blackfalds RCMP Sgt. Brent Dueck says officers initially responded to a crash between a small car and a moose on between Range Road 284 and 285 near Alberta Springs Golf Course at around 7:30 a.m.

However, Dueck says their investigation has so far revealed that a one ton truck pulling a trailer then struck six vehicles in front of it that had slowed down for the initial collision.

Dueck says only four minor injuries were reported, with some victims being treated and released at the scene.

“Considering the size and weight of the vehicles involved, it’s miraculous nobody was injured worse than they were,” he exclaimed.

Westbound traffic along Highway 11 was not impacted by the collisions while eastbound traffic was closed between Highway 20 and the QE II Highway.

An official cause of the second crash has yet to be determined and no charges have been laid at this point, but Dueck notes their investigation remains ongoing.

Dueck confirms the moose did not survive.
