Sylvan Lake man accused of killing wife appears in court

Sep 18, 2019 | 11:03 AM

A Sylvan Lake man charged with murdering his wife appeared in a Red Deer courtroom Wednesday morning.

Satnam Singh Sandhu, 41, is charged with second-degree murder in the death of Kulvinder Sandhu, who was 36. He also faces counts of attempted murder and aggravated assault during the incident.

However, Crown prosecutor Bill Wister says the file is still being reviewed to determine what charges will continue forward.

During Sandhu’s appearance, Judge Gordon Yake asked Sandhu if he understood the charges he’s facing. Sandhu nodded yes but when pressed for a verbal response, replied through a Punjabi interpreter, “I am in depression, I forget before I start speaking.”

Sandhu remains in custody on his second degree murder charge and has been ordered back in court on Oct. 11.

In the meantime, Crown prosecutors have sent an urgent request to RCMP for full disclosure ahead of that date, with Sandhu expected to retain the services of defence lawyer George Lebessis by then.

It was at about 10 a.m. on Sept. 11 when Sylvan Lake RCMP responded to a 911 call in a residential neighbourhood.

They arrived to find a 36-year-old woman suffering from serious injuries.

She was taken to hospital and died from her injuries three days later on Sept. 14.
