Guy Pelletier named RDC board chair

There’s been a big shakeup to the RDC Board of Governors.

Advanced Education Minister Demetrios Nicolaides has appointed three new members to the board, including a new chair, while rescinding the appointments of three existing board members.

Guy Pelletier is the new board chair, replacing Morris Flewwelling, while Kristen Korhonen and Julie Oliver are the other two new members. Each has been appointed for a three-year term through September 2022.

Flewwelling, Dianne Macaulay and Karin Melnyk have had their terms on the board rescinded.

“In revitalizing our agencies, boards and commissions, we focused our recruitment efforts on those with the right skills, competencies and experience for the job. The former government had filled positions to further its priorities and it is appropriate for us to do the same,” Laurie Chandler, Press Secretary for Advanced Education, said in a statement to rdnewsNOW.

“Our post-secondary institutions receive millions in taxpayer dollars and it is vital their boards have the strongest possible financial acumen and management experience. Furthermore, these new appointees will help our institutions build strong relationships with industry to ensure that we are getting better labour market outcomes.”

Chandler added that RDC’s transition towards becoming a university will not be impacted by the changes.

“I extend my personal gratitude to Mr. Flewwelling, Ms. Macauley and Ms. Melnyk for their dedication to RDC and the important roles they have played serving as valued members on our Board of Governors,” said Dr. Peter Nunoda, RDC President. “Their efforts have enhanced the lives of our students, and their contributions have positioned our institution well to continue serving our region in the future as a comprehensive regional teaching university.”

Pelletier, a former trustee and board chair with Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools, is currently chair of the RDC President Transition Team and Vice-President, Red Deer Region, for Melcor Developments.

Korhonen is Regional Vice President, Alberta Central, at BMO Financial Group, and Oliver is a Business Advisor for MNP in Red Deer.

“I congratulate and welcome the new Board of Governors members, and I look forward to working with the full Board as we continue the valuable work ahead to realize our bold vision for our future,” added Nunoda.

The next meeting of the RDC Board of Governors was scheduled for Thursday, but has been postponed to Oct. 10 to allow the new board members time to get acquainted with their roles.
