Rebels drop preseason tilt to Central rival Lethbridge

The Red Deer Rebels preseason record fell to 1-1-1-0 after a 3-2 overtime loss to the Hurricanes Saturday night in Lethbridge.

Rylan Thiessen got the home team on the board first 10:32 into the opening frame.

Five minutes later, Chris Douglas equalized for Red Deer while the team was shorthanded.

The game remained tied until late in the third when Zak Smith got the Rebels ahead with just 6:31 to go. However, only 2:37 later, Chase Wheatcroft tied the game again at 2-2.

In OT, Zack Stringer secured the win for Lethbridge at the 2:10 mark.

Both teams went 0/5 with the man advantage and the Canes outshot Red Deer 31-20.

Eric Ward and Byron Fancy shared the net for Red Deer, while Carl Tetachuk was between the pipes for Lethbridge.

Up next for Red Deer is a home exhibition game against Medicine Hat on Friday, Sept. 13 at 7 p.m. They close out the preseason Sept. 15 on the road in Calgary.

The regular season begins Sept. 21 at the Westerner Park Centrium against Edmonton.
