Recovery Day shines light on need for more services

Sep 7, 2019 | 7:00 PM

The need for addiction recovery options in Red Deer was spotlighted Saturday at a community event at City Hall Park.

Red Deer Recovery Day organizer Krista Black is founder of the movement which she hopes will result in the opening of a local recovery centre.

“Addictions can happen to anybody and so can recovery. We need to reduce the stigma around addiction, and we need to help the people who are in need because they can become valuable members of our society,” Black says.

“Red Deer really needs streamlined services with no gaps in between. The centre will fill in the gaps so there are no wait times between detox and treatment. A lot of people think you go to treatment and you’re cured and that you should then go on with your life, but you need to maintain your recovery or you’ll be a high risk for relapse.”

The recovery centre Black dreams of is currently in the fundraising stage. Meantime, efforts continue to open up the Red Deer Dream Centre, a proposed residential treatment facility.

On September 10, the people behind the Red Deer Dream Centre are hosting an open house from 4-7 p.m. at the form Lotus night club (4618 50 Avenue).

Jason Luan, the province’s Associate Minister of Mental Health and Addictions was scheduled to be at Red Deer Recovery Day, according to a province government itinerary released last weekend, but cancelled citing scheduling difficulties, Black noted.
