Red Deer area August unemployment rate dips slightly

RED DEER- The Red Deer area unemployment rate took a slight drop in August.

It went from 7.4% in July to 7.3% last month.

The Alberta unemployment rate rose from 7.0% to 7.2%.

Nationally, there was a boost in part-time, service-sector employment in August to the tune of 81,000 net new jobs.

The bulk of the new positions were picked up by young people.

But Stats Canada says even with the increase, the August unemployment rate stayed at 5.7% as more people looked for work.

Average hourly wages grew by 3.7% year-over-year, down from a 4.5% in July.

The jobless rate remains near a four-decade low.
