Crown prosecutor to speak about rural crime and the justice system

Central Albertans have a chance this month to learn more about how the criminal justice system works when it comes to rural crime.

On Sept. 19, the Red Deer/Lacombe Rural Community Crime Watch is hosting an event at the Lacombe Memorial Centre featuring Dominique Mathurin, Crown prosecutor from Red Deer.

It’s anticipated Mathurin will explain the role of the Crown and why there’s sometimes a ‘revolving door’ perception of Canada’s legal system.

Crime watch president Ken Wigmore says members of the public will be able to ask questions of Mathurin.

“I think the biggest concern is the ‘catch and release’ if I can put it that way,” says Wigmore. “What can be done about it? What is the Crown prosecutors view on it all and maybe some explanations to it.”

Wigmore hopes the event is able to clear up any misunderstandings people may have.

“There is a lot of background work that is being done,” he explains. “A lot of real good work by the RCMP and I’m sure by the court system. We just don’t understand what it is and we need to get to the front of it all and they need to hear from us.”

Wigmore says the goal is to educate the public on what is being done to combat rural crime.

“We cannot stop crime, we cannot deter it, the only thing we can do is educate people on how to protect themselves and what to look out for,” says Wigmore. “I hope they take away a better understanding of where the court systems are, if there is an understanding to take away from it.”
