House fire in Blackfalds

Sep 4, 2019 | 4:49 PM

No one was injured when fire broke out at a home in Blackfalds on Wednesday.

Blackfalds Fire Chief Robert Cote says the blaze at a duplex on Womacks Road near Leung Road was called in by a neighbour at about 4:15 p.m.

Everyone inside the building, including two people in the unit where the fire occurred and one person in the adjacent unit, came away without injuries. Two cats and a dog also got out safely, according to Cote.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but Cote says it appears to have started in the living room of the dwelling.

Cote says there was a fire alarm in the lower level of the unit where the bedrooms are located, but not on the main floor where the fire occurred.

Damage is estimated at $230,000, mainly to the roof and attic of the building.

Cote is reminding people not to run back inside a building that is on fire as the risks of doing so are simply too great.

He also reminds everyone to ensure all smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in your home are working and up to date.
