Sylvan Lake amends agreement with company working to build No Landfill Waste Facility

Aug 28, 2019 | 11:00 AM

The Town of Sylvan Lake is doing its part to help the company seeking to build a No Landfill Disposal Facility secure funding.

Town Council has approved an amendment to the Master Services Agreement with Fogdog Energy to allow for a guaranteed monthly tippage payment of $30,000.

The amount means that the Town of Sylvan Lake will be required to provide at least 300 tonnes of waste to the facility each month at a cost of $100/tonne.

Sylvan Lake currently generates about 5,800 tonnes of waste each year, or about 485 tonnes per month.

“No single month in 2018 was below 300 tonnes of waste generation, however, any future month(s) with fewer than 300 tonnes of waste generation would result in the Town paying the minimum amount of $30,000,” states the report.

The least amount of garbage collected in Sylvan Lake last year was 308 tonnes in February.

“Although there may be some occasional risk to the Town, it is minimal and will diminish as the town grows and the waste volume increases,” the report notes.

Since the initial Master Services Agreement was signed, Fogdog Energy has been working to secure investment capital for the project and to gain approval for the facility from Alberta Parks and Environment.

Fogdog’s No Landfill Disposal Facility would see Sylvan Lake’s regular waste regular waste, recycling and compost converted into carbon “fluff” and later sold for conversion into hydrocarbon products such as diesel and gasoline. Virtually any form of waste – excluding glass, metals and some hazardous waste – would be accepted.

The company hopes to have the facility open by the end of 2020.
