Long road to recovery for teen hit by vehicle in Red Deer

Aug 27, 2019 | 1:50 PM

It’s been an extremely tough time for a Red Deer teen and his family since he was hit by an SUV in the city’s east end.

It was at about 5:15 p.m. on August 19 when the collision happened along Ellenwood Drive.

The 14-year-old was rushed to hospital in Red Deer, put in an induced coma before being flown to the Alberta Children’s Hospital in Calgary where he remains.

He suffered a brain injury, according to his mother, along with numerous cuts, scrapes and bruises, and is fighting hard to make a full recovery.

“He is a miracle,” she told rdnewsNOW. “He is doing so amazing and we are so proud of all the hard work he is doing to heal and just get better.”

The teen has gone through physiotherapy and occupational therapy since being in hospital.

Michelle, his mom, says that because of his brain injury it’s not known how long it will take him to recover.

“He cannot walk unassisted and he doesn’t talk like he used to,” she shared. “Four-to-six word sentences that are very slowly spoken, and he usually has to pause after being asked a question. When we talk to him we have to only ask one question at a time.”

He will undergo an MRI to look into issues he’s having with the right side of his body.

Since the crash the boy’s mother, father and stepfather have been at his side the entire time.

“He is an amazing boy with a soft heart who loves hugs from his family and friends. He has the best smile and is willing to help out anyone in need with anything.”

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help the family while they’re off work. As of Tuesday at, the campaign has raised just over $1,200.

“We are overwhelmed by all of you and thank you all for every single kind word and thought and prayer,” the mother says. “Please continue to keep him, and us as well, in your thoughts and prayers.”
