Lemonade stands pop up in Red Deer in support of Stollery Foundation

Oftentimes, neonatal intensive care isn’t something one thinks about until they need it.

That, and raising money, were behind the sixth annual Lemonade Stand Day to benefit the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation.

More than 550 lemonade stands are registered for the event on Sunday, mostly in the Edmonton area, but with others south closer to Red Deer. It is run by Simply Supper, which also provides most, if not all of the supplies for participants.

Marlene Robertson and her group of kids — the Junior Lemon Squeezers — were set up at New Life Church on 77 Street with the goal of making a couple hundred dollars.

“There are so many little children, babies that are born really early that need the neonatal intensive care up there, and with the money coming from this, we’re hoping to buy five specialty beds at two hospitals in Edmonton through the Stollery Foundation,” explains Robertson.

“Not too long ago babies born early didn’t survive. Today we have more and more that are making it past early infancy and surviving to be healthy grown-ups. That’s what we want for all our children in the end.”

The units which the foundation hopes to install in the Royal Alexandra Hospital and Sturgeon Community Hospital are called Giraffe Omnibed CareStations. They provide a warm and safe environment for babies to develop, as well as easy access for doctors and parents to interact with their preterm infants.

Each unit costs $58,000.
