New bench in Rocky honours victims of impaired driving

Aug 21, 2019 | 4:06 PM

The Town of Rocky Mountain House unveiled the new Mothers Against Drunk Driving bench across form the Christianson Sports and Wellness Centre on Tuesday.

The bench was generously given as a gift from MADD Red Deer & District, MADD Canada, and James H. Brown & Associates.

“This beautiful bench will be a solid reminder to all residents and visitors, that we do not take impaired driving lightly,” said Mayor Tammy Burke. “It is my hope that it’s quiet presence here will prompt conversations that matter, conversations about safe habits and responsible choices, so that no other family member suffers an unbearable tragedy.”

Nicole Keeler from James H. Brown & Associates said many of their clients and families have suffered from the devastation caused by impaired driving, so they were honoured to contribute to the memorial bench.

Brenda Brown with MADD Red Deer & District gave a heartfelt and personal touch to her speech, telling how she was there not only as a representative for MADD.

“I also come here as a mom that lost her child who was killed by a drunk driver in November of 2014,” Brown shared.

“Sadly our community is no stranger to such incidents, the president of our chapter Marilyn Rinas, also lost her husband Wayne to a drunk driver when they lived in Rocky Mountain House with their two sons.”

The town says they hope the bench adds as reminder to encourage people to be responsible.
