Sylvan Lake touts strong building permit numbers

Aug 20, 2019 | 1:10 PM

Town officials say building permit numbers are proof of strong, steady growth for Sylvan Lake.

Permits issued last month totalled $30.7 million, according to a Town of Sylvan Lake release, compared to $21.4 million in July 2018.

To date, the monthly building permit average in Sylvan Lake sits around $3.6 million per month.

Residential permits lead the way last, boosted by a 98-unit apartment/multi-family building valued at $14.6 million.

A recent ATB Economics report indicates that the value of building permits issued by Alberta municipalities in June 2019, was down 31.3 per cent from the year previous – indicating that the province’s economy continues to struggle.

Sylvan Lake appears to be bucking the provincial downward trend for building permits cited in a recent ATB Financial report. Town officials say this is due to a combination of strong strategic planning, as well as location.

“Sylvan Lake has some wonderful new development opportunities available – the town is open for business, and our energetic team is here to facilitate development, and work with investors and builders through the application process,” says Ken Kalirai, Director of Planning and Development.
