Resolution still in the works for Eckville man facing dozens of child-porn related charges

Lawyers are still working towards a resolution for an Eckville man facing dozens of child-porn related offences dating back to 2013.

The 35-year-old man made a brief appearance in Red Deer Provincial Court on Wednesday and will remain behind bars for his next appearance on Sept. 25 when he’s expected to enter pleas on the 80 counts against him.

The man was originally arrested on Jan. 10 of this year by the Alberta Law Enforcement Response Team’s (ALERT) Internet Child Exploitation Unit (ICE), after receiving a tip from the Task Force Argos, a specialized online child exploitation unit of the Queensland Police Service in Australia.

It was at that time the Argos shared information about an Alberta man allegedly involved in trading child pornography images online.

ICE then searched homes in Eckville and Fox Creek associated to the identified suspect and seized a number of computers and electronic devices for forensic analysis.

He was charged with making child pornography, possessing child pornography, accessing child pornography and voyeurism. He was then arrested a second time on Jan. 18 by Sylvan Lake RCMP after allegedly breaching his release conditions relating to internet access.

In March, several new charges were laid against the man, including sexual assault, sexual interference, invitation to sexual touching, voyeurism, possessing, accessing, distributing, making child pornography and breach of recognizance.

ICE identified at least eight victims who were allegedly sexually assaulted by the suspect, with additional victims identified through forensic analysis of the computers and electronics seized.

ALERT officials claim more than half a million images and videos of child sexual exploitation and voyeurism were discovered during the investigation.

Sylvan Lake RCMP, Fox Creek RCMP, the Central Alberta Child Advocacy Centre in Red Deer and Caribou Child and Youth Centre in Grande Prairie are all said to have provided extensive assistance in the case.

Anyone with information regarding the investigation or any other cases related to child sexual exploitation, are encouraged to contact police or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
