HUNT INTENSIFIES

RCMP descend on tiny York Landing, MB in search for BC murder suspects

Jul 28, 2019 | 8:07 PM

The RCMP spent the night searching the area of York Landing, Manitoba for two teenage murder suspects and are continuing their manhunt today.

Mounties shifted the search operation for 18-year-old Bryer Schmegelsky and 19-year-old Kam McLeod after receiving a credible tip the two had been spotted near the community about 90-kilometres — as the crow flies — south of Gillam.

York Landing, with a population of 500, is only accessible by air or a two-hour ferry.

A rail line runs about 25 kilometres from the community.

Schmegelsky and McLeod are charged with one count of second-degree murder and are suspects in two other deaths.

The transition of resources to York Landing began Sunday evening after a tip was received about a pair of men seen at a local landfill.

Residents of York Landing have been advised to remain inside and lock their doors.

Manitoba RCMP released multiple updates on social media Sunday evening, including this one confirming there had been no arrests as of 7:45 p.m. MT.

Chief Leroy Constant of York Factory First Nation also offered an update Sunday evening.

Manitoba RCMP later put out this update at 10 p.m. MT, 11 p.m. local time.

RCMP added on Monday morning that they have no made contact with the pair spotted in York Landing.

Chief Constant says there are some 30 officers in the remote community, along with a dog team, emergency response teams, helicopters and armed men on all-terrain vehicles.

Constant says until the two suspects are captured or the community is deemed safe, a sense of fear will remain.

More details will be shared when they become available.
