Water Meter Replacements

Sylvan Lake moving forward with water meter replacement

Jul 25, 2019 | 2:40 PM

Council for the Town of Sylvan Lake has selected Neptune Technology Group to replace roughly 3,000 water meters in the community over the next several years.

The awarding of the Town’s water meter replacement contract came on Monday night following a Request For Proposal (RFP) process that determined the winning bid from Neptune Technology Group over another competitive bid from Metercor.

Officials say the Town currently uses three generations of water meters from Neptune Technology Group in order to capture water consumption of customers within the town.

The Town of Sylvan Lake currently has approximately 6,500 water meters within the community, with half being of the manual read type.

Manual read water meters are said to take a significant amount of resources to account for each customer’s usage every month and pose a safety risk for staff entering customer yards to read them.

In order to increase the level of service for water meter reading which also includes expediting the replacement of approximately 3,000 water meters over the next five years, Town officials say a report for budget adjustment was presented to the Council on May 13.

As a result, council approved a budget adjustment of $50,000 from the Utility Reserve to fund the hiring of a full-time meter reader in 2019 and approve a budget adjustment from the Utility Reserve to fund the 2019 water meter replacement and software/equipment upgrades for a total amount of up to $200,000.

For the next 5 years, Town officials say the water meter replacement program shall be awarded to the selected proponent based on the approved budget by council each year.
