Ponoka traffic stop solves rural break and enter

Jul 24, 2019 | 2:14 PM

Little did Ponoka RCMP know when they pulled over an erratic driver last week that they’d also be solving a nearby break an enter. But that’s exactly what happened.

On July 17, Mounties conducted a traffic stop around 11:00 a.m. on Highway 53 after an RCMP member spotted a vehicle being driven erratically.

Investigation determined the driver was on conditions that prohibited them from driving a vehicle without the vehicle owner present.

Police say the driver was arrested and taken to Ponoka RCMP Detachment where he remains in custody.

A search of the vehicle revealed several pieces of stolen property from a prior rural residential break and enter, with the homeowner contacted but unaware their house had been broken into.

Mounties say the stolen property was returned to the homeowner and the car determined to be owned by the driver, but not insured.

Lee Curtis, 35, is facing charges of possession of property obtained by crime less than $5,000, break and enter with intent to a residence, possession of break-in instruments, three counts of fail to comply with conditions of a recognizance and two charges under the Traffic Safety Act.

Curtis is scheduled to appear in Ponoka Provincial Court on July 26.
