Innisfail creates Policing and Community Safety Committee

The Town of Innisfail will soon be seeking volunteers to join a new Policing and Community Safety Committee.

This after council unanimously passed third and final reading for a bylaw to create the committee on Monday night.

Town officials say the goal of the new committee will be to foster collaboration for a safe and secure community, acting as a liaison between council, the RCMP, Community Peace Officers and the citizens of Innisfail.

According to CAO Todd Becker, the committee’s focus will highlight that public safety is not just a sole matter of the RCMP and enforcement services, but of all community stakeholders.

The Policing and Community Safety Committee will consist of two elected officials appointed by council, plus three members-at-large, with one potentially being a youth.

The committee will consist of a maximum of seven voting members with two-year terms.

Non-voting members may include the mayor, the Officer in Charge at Innisfail RCMP and Town CAO.

Becker says the Town will now develop ads to attract community members to sit on the committee, appoint two council reps, and organize committee orientation through the Solicitor General’s office.

Town officials anticipate the committee to be fully established by fall.
