Adjusted Bylaw

Town of Rocky changes some fees & rates to “adjust to the times”

The Town of Rocky Mountain House has adopted a new fees and rates bylaw that establishes all fees and rates in a single document, rather than in multiple bylaws, for improved access for all residents, staff and users.

“It will be easier to access as well with the new website, and because it’s in one document, when somebody inquires it’s easier to provide them with one document instead of 15 possibly 20,” explains Legislative Services Clerk Renee Hartling.

The new bylaw introduces some new fees and a few tweaks to some rates that hadn’t changed since 1996.

“We went through all of the departments and indicated where we felt there was a fee missing or the payment that was established under a resolution or a bylaw was out of date and needed to be updated and that information came from the directors and through meetings with the directors,” describes Hartling.

As an example, requesting a tax search, normally used by realtors, currently costs $7 and would be increasing to $15 to help cover administration fees.

Another proposed increase would be to residents coming in for information requiring research and copying which used to be a flat $25 an hour. The new fee would be that, plus a down payment of minimum $25 or 50% of anything that is estimated to cost over $150.

Another area being looked at is the airport, which is currently not charging any landing fees.

“In 1997 the airport committee, which used to be recognized as the commission, passed a resolution not to charge landing fees. But one of things is the airport is located on county, land so we would have to get approval from county council to allow us to charge fees,” stated Hartling.
