Creekside to benefit from continued work on 54 Street extension project

Jul 21, 2019 | 9:00 AM

The Town of Rocky Mountain House has opted to proceed with the expropriation of land along the 54 Street road allowance between Edgerton Drive and the CP rail line for the purpose of continuing the 54 Street extension project.

The Town intends to fully compensate the land owner at market value for the lost land, and must follow the Expropriation Act.

“An inquiry officer found that the Town was being sound, fair, and reasonable and ruled in favour of the Town,” informed Director of Engineering & Operations Marco Schoeninger.

The street extension will continue into Creekside across the train tracks adding a second entrance into the community.

A project open house took place on February 5 to get residents’ opinions on whether the road improvement should take place.

“Some of the feedback from various residents (in Creekside) was also about the importance of connecting the community. They felt disconnected because of the sheer length around,” explained Schoeninger. “They also raised issues about the fires in 2009 or 2010 and as a result wanted the decrease in the active response time from emergency response.”

Currently, emergency response crews have to travel 2.4 kilometres to access Creekside.

With the new rail crossing and road extension, that distance will be reduced to just 600 metres.
