Rewarding good deeds

Rocky Peace Officers pulling over kids this summer… and rewarding them

Jul 16, 2019 | 8:26 PM

Rocky Mountain House’s very own Peace Officers are planning to keep a close eye on kids this summer with hopes of catching them… doing something good.

With support from the Town of Rocky and local businesses A&W, Dairy Queen, Subway, and Juice Junkies, officers will be rewarding kids for doing positive things like crossing the street properly, wearing a bike helmet or even picking up garbage among other things.

“Once they receive the positive ticket they can bring it into the town office, and they have a tear away bottom,” explains Senior Community Peace Officer Brandon Smailes. “The bottom goes into a bin for grand prize draw at the end of the summer and with the rest of the ticket they get a free coupon.

“It was a little bit of a surprise for most of them, but it’s definitely been positive feedback once they get the positive ticket,” Smailes says about when they first began the program.

Smailes recalls one story in particular of a recent ticket he handed out.

”I was driving up one of the streets and I noticed a couple kids riding their bikes up on the sidewalk with their helmets on, with their mom out there with them. When I stopped, she kind of rolled her eyes and wasn’t overly impressed to see me at first. But then when I asked if I could give out a positive ticket for them wearing there bike helmets, they were pretty happy to see it.”

There has been 16 positive tickets given out so far with a total of 100 to give out for the year.
