Tornado touches down near Crossfield

A tornado was spotted near Crossfield on Sunday afternoon prompting a Tornado Alert for Kneehill County.

The alert was issued the tornado was first spotted at around 2:10 p.m. and was lifted at about 3:30.

Environment Canada said it was tracking a line of thunderstorms which produced the tornado and multiple funnel clouds.

“This is a dangerous and potentially life-threatening situation,” the agency wrote.

The EF-0 tornado produced powerful winds that gusted between 90 to 130 km/h.

One person reported seeing the twister all the way from Innisfail.

The tornado grazed the side of a home in the area and ripped up fences, so the homeowners were out trying to round up their animals. No people or animals were hurt.

The twister also destroyed a neighbour’s RV.

According to The Weather Network, on average Alberta usually sees between 15 and 16 tornadoes per year, and is the province with the second-highest number of tornadoes annually.
