Man arrested in west central Alberta for stealing $10,000 lawnmower

A 33-year-old man from Alder Flats is facing several charges after an attempted sale of property on social media was too suspicious to go unnoticed.

It was July 9 when RCMP’s Central Alberta District Crime Reduction Unit recovered a stolen Cub Cadet lawnmower valued at over $10,000.

The recovery came as a result of information received about a suspicious ‘for sale’ post on Facebook.

It was in the afternoon when RCMP received a tip about the lawnmower, and then identified the suspect.

RCMP air support provided assistance resulting in a search warrant being obtained for a rural property in Alder Flats, which is just west of Buck Lake, and between Drayton Valley and Rocky Mountain House.

One male was arrested without incident and RCMP recovered the lawnmower, which was stolen out of Sherwood Park last month, as well as a snowmobile stolen during a previous break and enter in Rimbey.

Justin Neil Nelson Handbury is charged with possession of stolen property over $5000, two counts of altering a vehicle ID number, trafficking property obtained by crime, two counts of failure to comply with conditions, and driving while unauthorized.

Handbury was granted release and is scheduled to appear in a Breton courtroom on July 24.

At the time of his arrest, he was on release related to other charges out of Edmonton.
