Innisfail creating Policing & Community Safety Committee

Jul 11, 2019 | 10:20 AM

Fostering collaboration for a safe and secure community is the goal behind a new committee being created by the Town of Innisfail.

On Monday, council granted first and second reading to the Policing and Community Safety Committee Bylaw which sets out a draft terms of reference for the proposed committee.

CAO Todd Becker says it’s hoped the committee will act as a liaison between council, the RCMP, Community Peace Officers and the citizens of Innisfail.

“Its focus takes away that public safety is a sole matter of the RCMP and our enforcement services,” he explains. “The intent is to collaborate with the community to identify and to move towards more of a safe, secure community by the inclusion of all of the stakeholders.”

Becker hopes the bylaw and committee will get the community talking more about public safety.

“It’s made up of two elected officials appointed by council. But also, it’s made up of three members-at-large, so citizens in the community, with one potentially being a youth,” he points out. “Public members will be sitting on the committee and they’ll be providing their insights from the public. So it ties in RCMP with a Town bylaw and enforcement services directly with council.”

The committee will consist of a maximum of seven voting members, with two-year terms. Non-voting members may include the mayor, the Officer in Charge at Innisfail RCMP and Town CAO.

Becker anticipates third and final reading of the new Policing and Community Safety Committee Bylaw to be approved at council’s next regular meeting July 22.
