Loose Moose Kin Club now serving the community

The Kinsmen and Kinettes are now joined by a new co-ed club serving the Central Alberta community.

The Loose Moose Kin Club of Central Alberta was officially chartered by Kin Canada on June 8.

After being with the Red Deer Kinsmen for over 10 years, Loose Moose President Craig Smallwood says it was time to create a new option with a different frame of thought.

“One is not wrong or right, it’s just two different kinds of concepts,” he explains. “We meet Saturday nights, which is a little more social and we can hang out with each other afterwards and it’s a mixed club, so we actually have a lot of couples that join us that way.”

Smallwood says with a more lottery-based focus at the Kinsmen, the Loose Moose will take a more event-based approach to fundraising through things like pub crawls and beer gardens.

“We’re definitely the same team,” he points out. “We always like to help each other out but it just gives people a different type of volunteering and it might fit better for one than the other. We meet every other Saturday.”

With an initial membership of about 17 people, Smallwood hopes to get the word out and see that number grow.

“Even though we’re only officially chartered for a month, we’ve gone to the food bank and done some stuff like that,” says Smallwood. “And we’re in the midst of organizing both a pub crawl and potentially looking at doing a river-float that might end in a beer gardens, it’s one thing we’re currently exploring. We’d love to have more people.”

Smallwood says their fundraising efforts would help support similar causes as the Kinsmen and Kinettes.

“The motto is ‘Serving the Community’s Greatest Needs.” So very much in-line with the current Kinsmen and Kinettes,” he explains. “We’re just another way to go out and volunteer in our community. We try to keep it very informal and hopefully will appeal to people looking for that kind of thing.”
