Sundre couple wins $14.9 million

Kim Verkerk was having trouble sleeping one mid-June night, and checking her LOTTO 6/49 numbers was no help.

The Sundre resident checked the June 15 ticket she shared with her husband, Michael, and discovered they had won $14,912,312.30!

“I was up late – probably one or two in the morning,” said Kim. “I saw the ticket on the kitchen table and thought, ‘Sure, I’ll see if the numbers are up yet.’”

“I tried to scan the ticket on the mobile app, but I kept getting the ‘Prize information not available at this time’ message,” she continued. “So I went to WCLC’s website and checked the numbers there.”

The new winner said she was not expecting what she saw next.

“I started going through the numbers and they were all matching,” she said. “It felt like I had fallen asleep and started dreaming – it felt so surreal.”

“I told Mike and he couldn’t believe it either,” she continued. “We waited a little while and then checked the mobile app again. It all started to feel real when we saw all of the numbers come up on the screen.”

As the initial surprise of winning begins to sink in, the Verkerks said they have started thinking about ideas for their multimillion-dollar windfall.

“We’re going to share with some family members, and plan a trip or two,” said Kim. “But the majority of the money will be put into the business we run together.”

The happy winners purchased their $22 LOTTO 6/49 ticket at Sundre IGA, located at 557 Main Avenue West in Sundre. Their winning numbers were 10, 19, 24, 30, 35 and 49.

The Verkerks shared the draw’s $29,801,647 jackpot with another Alberta ticket purchased in Edmonton.
