Crime map launches in Red Deer

A map of crime incidents in Red Deer is now publicly available for citizens to peruse.

The online map shows reported crimes from the last 14 days relating to theft from a motor vehicle, theft of a motor vehicle, theft over/under $5000, break and enter, and mischief. Exact addresses are not to be shown.

The map will operate on a one-year pilot project basis.

“Red Deer, like many other communities in Alberta, is facing significant social and community safety challenges,” said Mayor Tara Veer.

“Community safety is a top priority for city council and we know that reducing crime requires a multi-faceted approach. Local police have used crime mapping for many years to inform enforcement efforts and this map is now one more tool for residents to use to stay informed about crime in our city.”

Staff Sergeant Jeff McBeth added that the crime mapping used by the detachment with operations like Pinpoint has proven very useful.

“Most thefts are crimes of opportunity, which means that the criminal is looking for unlocked vehicles or residences where items can be taken quickly and easily,” said McBeth.

“By taking simple steps, such as removing valuables from vehicles and by locking cars and homes, theft is no longer an easy opportunity and most criminals will then move on to easier targets.”

McBeth and Veer stressed the importance of reporting suspicious activity, noting that it is the main way RCMP can know where to best deploy its members.

Suspicious activity and suspicious persons can be reported to the non-emergency line at 403-343-5575. If you witness a crime in progress call 9-1-1. If applicable, details will then be put into the crime map.
