ELECTED SENATE

Province announces Alberta Senate Election Act

Jun 27, 2019 | 6:42 AM

EDMONTON- The UCP has introduced legislation to bring back elections to select provincial candidates for the Senate.

Justice Minister Doug Schweitzer says the first vote will be held in the fall of 2021 for up to three candidates to be offered to the federal government for Senate consideration.

Premier Kenney stated, “We are introducing the Alberta Senate Election Act to enable Albertans to choose the people they think would best represent them in the Upper Chamber. Senators who are elected by Albertans have shown that they effectively stand up for Alberta’s economy, jobs and families. They set a strong example to other provinces of the benefits of having effective voices with the moral legitimacy of having been elected.”

The premier promised during the provincial election campaign to revive Senate elections but fast-tracked the legislation after only three of Alberta’s six senators voted to reject Bill C-69, which rewrites the rules for assessing major energy projects.
