Trial ordered for 2017 homicide in Red Deer

A man charged in a 2017 homicide in Red Deer has been ordered to stand trial.

Gabriel Juma We Agotic, 35, faces one count of manslaughter for the death of Mathian Chol on March 29, 2017.

It was just after 6 a.m. that day when Red Deer RCMP were dispatched to an apartment to assist with a male suffering from serious injuries after being assaulted. He was eventually flown to a Calgary hospital and placed on life support before dying the following day. An autopsy determined Chol, who was 26, died by homicide.

Agotic was eventually arrested in Calgary on July 17, 2017.

A preliminary hearing was held this month to determine whether enough evidence was present for the case to proceed to trial. Judge G.E. Deck ruled Tuesday morning there was and set an arraignment date for August 12.

Agotic will remain in custody after an application for bail was denied.

A publication ban prevents the sharing of any evidence presented during the preliminary hearing and bail hearing.
