Local leaders meet to talk crime, housing and mental health

Jun 22, 2019 | 2:35 PM

Several community leaders came together this week to discuss a wide variety of hot topics, from crime to housing, and homelessness to mental health and addictions.

Dubbed the Community Safety Summit, the meeting was led by the Systems Leadership Team, which includes representatives from Alberta Health Services, Children’s Services, The City of Red Deer, Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools, Red Deer Public Schools, Community Corrections, RCMP and the Urban Aboriginal Voices Society.

The SLT is focused on community safety and identifying gaps in the system, along with potential solutions.

Red Deer RCMP Superintedent Gerald Grobmeier says citizens and agencies, inlcluding his own, have shown great commitment to working together towards the betterment of all Red Deerians.

“The SLT is here to support those collaboratives and hopefully add to their excellent work while also breaking down any obstructions that these groups may be facing,” Grobmeier says.

“We in the SLT aim to look at community safety with one overarching view and not focus on one type of event. This view will enhance community safety for all Red Deerians. This view will help us to take the next steps in collaborative work, find synergies and efficiencies within the groups thereby providing an enhanced service with the resources in place.”

Children’s Services, represented by Peggy Olstad, added that working with the SLT has allowed her to view community safety with a wider lens.

“There is a wealth of wisdom and expertise within existing community collaborations and community agencies across our city,” she says. “This is an opportunity to challenge ourselves to work together to build a coordinated approach to a healthier, safer community for those we serve and who live with in our community.”

The Systems Leadership Team launched after city council adopted its Community Safety Strategy in 2016.
