Drag group celebrates first anniversary with summer kickoff show

Jun 20, 2019 | 7:15 PM

A local group continues to break performing arts ground in Red Deer one year after debuting.

4Q, a drag group comprised of all local performers, has set the entertainment scene on fire, performing multiple times a month at various venues.

That includes last winter during the first ever Canada Winter Games Pride event.

Kelli Eletrix, a four-year veteran of the stage, wants to spread the word about the group ahead of its one-year anniversary show this Saturday at The Krossing.

“The excitement and support we have received from our guests and local businesses in the past year has been huge,” Eletrix says.

“It is very important to us that we create a safe, inclusive environment at our shows, and we are so proud and thankful to be met with respect and love from our audiences. The shows are a ton of fun and we love entertaining such great people.”

The upcoming show is called Glitterazzi – A Kickoff to Summer with tickets going for just $15 on Eventbrite.

The group also includes Red Deerian Sparkle Emotion, a 10-year vet, Ruby Hart, an 11-year drag performer from Stettler, and Rocky Mountain House native DD Fierce, who’s been at it for three years.

“Our business’s main focus has always been on bringing drag to a city where there really hasn’t ever been this kind of entertainment before, let alone ongoing and on a regular basis,” Eletrix says when asked if the group stands for anything.

“It means a lot to each of us that we all work so well together and get to come together and lay down this foundation for drag entertainment in Red Deer and inspire future artists within the community and promote self expression. The growth of this genre of entertainment in Red Deer is what we stand for.”

4Q’s members have not experienced much in the way of discrimination since taking the stage together for the first time, with most, if not all people choosing to focus on the fun of it.

“Every show, we each do different numbers, from Liza Minelli to Lady Gaga to Shania Twain, and from country to broadway to high power dance pop. It’s a great evening of music, comedy and impersonations,” she says.

“The most common misconception is that we want to be women when we dress up like we do, or it has some sexual connotation. Not true! Drag is an art form, it’s not a way of life. And just as art allows for creativity, drag is simply another outlet for expression.”
