Temporary Shelter Bylaw to proactively address illegal camping or tenting in Drayton Valley

A bylaw aimed at addressing residents’ concerns over temporary shelters in the town of Drayton Valley seems to be working well so far.

That according to Mayor Michael Doerksen who says after passing second and third readings on May 1, the Town’s Temporary Shelter Bylaw 2019/06/P has garnered no feedback from either the public or the Peace Officers and fire department that enforce it.

“The way the bylaw was written, there wasn’t necessarily a specific issue we wanted to address but just give the authorities a little bit more teeth to be able to deal with situations that may arise,” he explains. “To my knowledge, no particular situation has arisen that we’ve had to deal with at this time but we’ve had some issues in the past. It’s kind of proactive, saying that if we ever have another issue, we have something on paper that dictates how we can proceed and what the expectations are.”

Town officials say the bylaw aims to curb activities such as the construction of temporary shelters and sleeping in camping units on private property or tenting on public lands.
