BIG 105, 106.7 The Drive team up with Canadian Blood Services for ‘Bloodathon’

Central Albertans are being encouraged to roll up their sleeves and help save a life this Friday.

BIG 105, 106.7 The Drive and Canadian Blood Services are teaming up to present their second annual “Bloodathon.”

The event runs Friday (June 14) from 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. and aims to book as many appointments as possible to give blood in Red Deer.

Shaun Richer, territory manager – donor relations for Canadian Blood Services, says the event is also a great way to say ‘Thank You’ to all of their donors.

“It’s National Blood Donor Week all this week and for tomorrow (Friday), it’s actually National Blood Donor Day,” he explains. “Up until the end of the month, June 30, we have approximately 470 open appointments. We’re looking for every blood type but the one that is of vital importance is of course O – negative because that is the universal blood type that can go to anybody.”

For those afraid of needles, Richer ensures it’s a quick and easy process.

“It takes about 5 – 10 minutes to donate,” says Richer. “The entire time that you’re in the blood donation centre is about an hour and you have to remember that you are literally helping to save a life. But we do understand that some people have a fear of needles and just have a fear of coming in, so we encourage them to bring a friend, it’s always easier with somebody that you know by your side.”

Richer says it’s a rewarding experience for those that donate and much appreciated by those in need.

“Once you leave the donation centre, you do have that sense of pride,” he exclaims. “Because again, you do know that you’re helping to save a life.”

Those who book are eligible to win prizes, including a special prize for first time donors and a new prize from event sponsors every hour.

Groups of 10 or more are also eligible to win a patio party at Bo’s Bar & Stage.
