Notre Dame Cougars hand out year-end awards

Excellence in high school athletics was celebrated Monday night at the 2019 École Secondaire Notre Dame High School Cougars Athletics Banquet.

Anne-Marie Purdy (senior volleyball / senior basketball / senior handball / soccer / tennis) was named Female Athlete of the Year, as well as MVP of senior girls basketball / handball / soccer and given the Coaches Award for senior girls volleyball.

Male Athlete of the Year was Zack Jansen (senior volleyball / senior basketball / senior handball / track & field). Jansen was also given the Coaches Award in senior volleyball and named MVP of senior handball. In boy’s track and field, Jansen earned a bronze medal in the senior boy’s 100m hurdles.

Grade 10 Athlete of the Year went to Sam Jansen (cross country running / senior volleyball / junior handball / track / tennis). Jansen was also named MVP of junior boy’s handball, competed in four events at track zones and set a zone record in javelin at zones.

Grade 10 Female Athlete of the Year was Shynelle Woroniuk (senior volleyball / senior basketball / badminton / track and field / tennis). Woroniuk was also named MVP for badminton and track & field and won a gold medal in junior badminton mixed doubles and a bronze medal in junior girls high jump at ASAA provincials.

Physical Education Teacher and Athletics Director Ian Rattan points out Zach and Sam Jansen are brothers as well as first cousins with Woroniuk.

“Talk about athletic genes!” says Rattan.

The Greg Hall Spirit Award was given to Reid Howell and Emmanuel Santos, while the Cougars Leadership Award winner was Kia Piche and Johann Danielson.

Sr. Boys Volleyball (Zone / Sportsmanship banner at Provincials / Consolation Champion at Provincials)

Girls Golf – Zone Champions

Jr. Boys Volleyball – Zone Champions

Jr. Boys Basketball – Bronze in Zones

Sr. Girls Handball – Zone Champions / Provincials Sportsmanship banner

Badminton – Team bronze medalist / Jr. Mixed Doubles gold medalist (Woroniuk and Chatwood) / Sr. Girls Doubles bronze medalist (Thiabult / Greise)

Track & Field – Team bronze medalist – Jr. Girls high jump bronze (Woroniuk) / Sr. Boys 100 m hurdles bronze (Zack Jansen) and Sr. Boys triple jump gold – Illya Omelyanchuck

Boys rugby – Zone Champions

Girls rugby – Zone Champions

The Lindsay Thurber Raiders Athletic Awards Banquet goes on Wednesday followed by Hunting Hills on Thursday.
