Supportive living facility at Gasoline Alley celebrates ribbon cutting

Representatives from Alberta Health Services and H&H Total Care Services Inc. celebrated the ribbon cutting on Red Deer’s newest supportive and independent living space.

Officials say The Hamlets of Red Deer offers a variety of living spaces where seniors can get support for their health and personal needs in a home-like environment.

Leanne Rudrum, AHS interim director of seniors’ health for Red Deer – Rocky Mountain House, says the facility is meeting a need in the Central Zone for supportive living Level 4 and supportive living with dementia care.

“As well as the fact that they also have independent living, so it allows spouses that have a loved one in care to also be in the facility as well,” she explains. “SL-4 would be people that require 24-hour health care aid care, plus oversight by an LPN. Then any of the professional care, the RN care, the physio, O.T., those types of rehab services, would come from Alberta Health Services home care.”

Residents began moving into the Hamlets at Red Deer in February. Located southwest of Gasoline Alley, the facility provides an additional 136 new supportive living spaces to the community where seniors who have more complex needs – including those with dementia – can get support for their health and personal needs in a home-like environment.

“We’re so pleased seniors and families in Red Deer now have access to more supportive living spaces in their community,” says Health Minister Tyler Shandro. “Providing appropriate care to residents in their new home will mean fewer people need to seek care in hospital, taking pressure off the acute-care system. The new Hamlets facility is helping to meet the growing demands in Red Deer by giving people the right care and living options that meet their needs.”

The Hamlets at Red Deer is owned and operated by H&H Total Care Services Inc., with AHS contracting 72 spaces for designated supportive living and 54 spaces to provide specialized dementia care. Ten other spaces are private.

Another 48 independent living spaces opened earlier this month following the completion of Phase 2 construction, supported by $10.2-million funding from the province.

“Now that the construction is complete, we are focused on providing a good quality of life for those in our care and becoming a vibrant part of the community,” says Andre Van Ryk, CEO of H&H Total Care Services Inc.

The supportive living spaces promote residents’ independence and aging in place through the provision of services such as 24-hour monitoring, emergency response, security, meals, housekeeping and social activities.

On-site licensed practical nurses and healthcare aides support those residents requiring assistance with daily living, including personal care, and recreational programs.
