Rockies first chili cook-off champion

The public library in Rocky Mountain House had its first chili cook off yesterday (Thursday) which pit spicy against sweet, traditional against new.

For just a small donation locals could go in, get their fill of chili and cast their vote for which dish was best.

After the votes were tallied and each chili chef waited for their dishes name to be called, it was actually 11-year-old Jayce Borley who won the golden ladle.

“At first my heart stopped as soon as she said little bean, because as soon as she said little bean I’m like, wait a sec, that’s mine,” said Borley excitedly

Every special dish needs a special ingredient and Jayce’s idea of adding rhubarb won the votes.

“It just gave it a bit of tang in there, for extra flavour, just enough, I wanted to try something unique and apparently the rhubarb took it home,” explains young Borley.

The chili champion said they were still deciding what recipe they would use for the contest and one day while picking rhubarb he had an idea.

Jayce and his mother went online to see if it was something that could be done and they got to work.

“I bet no else has this, so let’s put it in to try something new, and let’s hope people enjoy,” Borley said.

This was his first ever cooking competition and says he has plans to do it again and perhaps compete in others as well.
