Trial ordered for Sylvan Lake doctor accused of trying to arrange sex with child

A family physician from Sylvan Lake accused of trying to arrange sex with a young girl has been ordered to stand trial.

A preliminary hearing was held in Edmonton on Monday for Dr. Fred Janke.

The 63-year-old was arrested in Edmonton on June 28 of last year. He is charged with making arrangements to commit sexual offences against a child, making child pornography and distribution of child pornography.

The Alberta Law Enforcement Response Team (ALERT) says Janke had allegedly been engaged in sexually explicit conversations with a person he met online dating back to Oct. 2017. The conversations allegedly progressed to Janke attempting to arrange for sex with the person’s 5-year-old daughter. However, ALERT says the daughter did not exist and that Janke had been chatting with a Victoria Police Department undercover operator.

Janke began practicing medicine in Sylvan Lake in 1984 and helped establish the Sylvan Family Health Centre in 1988. He was named Sylvan Lake’s Citizen of the Year in 2000.

Dates for the trial have not yet been scheduled.
