Rocky Christians School students attended Clearwater County meeting

A grade 8/9 social studies class from Rocky Christens School took in Clearwater County’s regular council meeting on Tuesday, and were even referred to as the “shadow council.”

“What a better way to be involved in government then to see it from the ground up, no political parties involved but still people working together for the common goal,” says teacher Jacquelyn Magnus.

Students sat next to each of the councillors and a few times were allowed to take part and were asked what they would do in regards to certain situations.

County council even allowed their “shadow council” to debate about the proposed paving of Range Road 4-3 (Gimlet Road).

Most students were genuinely surprised at the cost of things that they normally never thought about, in particular, the fact that it would cost $1.4 million dollars per mile to pave a gravel road.

“They turned it into a total teaching tool, which was fantastic. Some of my kids even wanted to go up for a second turn,” said Magnus

This was Magnus’ first time taking her class in for a council meeting. She is hoping to make this trip a semi-annual experience for future students.
