Sunnybrook Farm Museum staff and animals welcome Red Deerians back for a new year

Make it 31 years for the Sunnybrook Farm Museum which held its unofficial start to the summer event on Saturday.

There were goats, pigs, cows and turkeys, among other wild things to entertain the entire family, and that’s just the farm portion of the popular Red Deer gathering place.

The historic and recently renovated Calder House is also available for viewing by residents this summer.

Executive Director Ian Warwick calls his staff stewards of a gift given to the citizens of Red Deer by Norman and Iva Bower in the late 1980s.

“This is such an amazing gift, it’s 10 acres in the middle of the city, and lots of people drive by the sign but never come in,” he says.

“Admission is only by donation. Lots come everyday and enjoy the playground and visit the animals. There are picnic tables, there are tents, and the people of Red Deer should all enjoy it.”

Students from more than 70 central Alberta schools will visit the farm over the coming months for education programs and daycamps.
