Public help RCMP nab three suspects in Sundre

Three people wanted on numerous warrants are in custody thanks to the keen eye of the public, according to RCMP.

It was May 15 when Mounties say they received a complaint of several suspicious persons at a business in Sundre. Members attended and located a vehicle backed into a stall with a trio of individuals loitering.

Two males and one female provided false names to officers, but police were able to determine their true identities.

The two males were wanted in connection to a car jacking in Drayton Valley that had occurred a few days prior, while the female had numerous arrest warrants out of multiple jurisdictions.

All three were arrested for their outstanding warrants, which included robbery, weapons offences and fraud. A search of the vehicle yielded illegal drugs and weapons, and the vehicle was seized.

“The assistance from the public was key in nabbing these three individuals,” says Cpl. Joe. Mandel, Sundre RCMP. “We located numerous items in the vehicle that we believe are stolen and are attempting to follow up with the possible owners so there may be further charges related to possession of stolen property to come for these three.”

Braidon Ophus, 23, of Calgary, faces 14 counts, including six for failure to comply with conditions, as well as for misuse of a license plate, cocaine possession, and operating an uninsured motor vehicle.

Shawn Freake, 24, of Drayton Valley, faces four counts including unauthorized possession of a prohibited weapon, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, cocaine possession, and obstruction.

Kiara Num, 19, of Red Deer, faces seven counts, including three for failure to comply with conditions.

The three remain in custody and have made their initial appearance in a Didsbury courtroom.
